The exact time or period when the Kamasutra was written is uncertain. Different historians have given different estimates, ranging from 400 BCE to 300 CE.[16][note 1] John Keay, a historian who specializes in India, suggests that the Kama Sutra is a collection of various texts that were compiled into its current form in the 2nd century CE.[17] However, Wendy Doniger, an Indologist who has translated the Kama Sutra and studied many other Hindu scriptures, argues that the surviving version of the Kama Sutra must have been revised or composed after 225 CE because it refers to the Abhiras and the Andhras dynasties that did not jointly rule major regions of ancient India before that year.[18] The text also does not mention the Gupta Empire, which dominated most of ancient India and influenced its arts, culture and economy from the 4th century to the 6th century.
